Thing 9

I have been wedded to Internet Explorer for quite some time but it's becoming increasingly obvious that I need to move on so this exercise was a very useful one.  I guess it doesn't help that we have such an old version of IE installed on our PCs but I have been using Firefox more and more as so many websites don't respond to IE in various ways and our online resources often seem to function so much better in Firefox.

I wasn't that familiar with Google Chrome but have just had a quick go and find it's really nice and simple to use - I like the single search box and how easy it is to bookmark things.  As with Firefox, the large, vivid typeface it uses also appeals - perhaps now is the time to get on a new horse!

Thing 11

Facebook this time.  I did once have a account but the whole choice whether to friend/unfriend (I may be using outdated terminology) was a little awkward sometimes and this, amongst other things, led me to quickly abandon it and I live quite happily without it.   

I have no desire to return to the fold so went for Activity 2 and, alongside that of the UoS had a look at the Facebook pages for LSE and University of Warwick and my main observation is that there doesn't seem to be too much of a difference between them all.  I'm not convinced about the need for Facebook in Libraries and that there are better ways of communicating with students who prefer to put it to more social and frivolous purposes. I notice that in all 3 sites there's very few library-related external posts, just people advertising their clubs, or trying to recruit for jobs. 

Thing 10

I'm a latecomer to 23 Things and am doing everything in a rather back-to-front way so Twitter today and then maybe Doodle tomorrow.  I was intrigued by Twitter so spurred on to get started, it was easy to set up and when i got a choice of 5 other tweeters to follow I was thrilled to see that there were all different kinds of interesting people to choose from.   My one hitch came when i had to upload my picture, my first attempt was the wrong size but Twitter wouldn't let me delete it and change it to another.   However I followed the law that if something doesn't work in Internet Explorer then it's bound to do so in Firefox and it proved true once more.

Although I'm still following relatively few people most of whom have funny/interesting things to say, I'm feeling rather bamboozled by the amount of things that they send.  I think that there must be some kind mania that sweeps over some, Catilin Moran has it severely.   I don't know if I'm ever going to catch the mania however and, although I have now sent one Tweet, I'm not sure that there's going to be many more. That aside, I might check it now and again and look in on the chatter.
